At the height of Jim Crow laws, E'kalb Hollow was a small African American town located deep in the woods of Southern Virginia and home to the resilient Braxton family.
Unending hurts, pain, and devastation shattered the lives of this family time and time again. Despite the fact that bigotry and racism rocked their world, neither had the power to destroy their self-respect.
The narrative explores the life of a mentally challenged child during a time when doctors had limited knowledge in the treatment of mental illnesses. The case was ignored until a series of tragic events further traumatized the child and deeply impacted the family.
Central to the story is the incredible strength of a mother who, against all odds, protected her children. Faced with hardships, racism, and injustices, she persevered, refusing to allow any obstacle to break her spirit.
As with any devastating circumstances, time is the antidote for healing. In the long run, the Braxtons learned to mend their broken spirits by weeding out offenses, treasuring happy times, and sharing precious memories.
